An Assessment of Cargo Throughput at Tin Can Island Ports Complex between 1977 and 2014

Abstract

The study carried out an assessment of cargo throughput at Tin Can Island Port Complex (TCIPC) Lagos, Nigeria between 1977 and 2014. This was with a view to identifying the contribution of individual cargo types to total traffic at TCIPC. Annual Statistics of operations of the port submitted to the Nigerian Ports Authority were used for the study. Using descriptive statistics and trend analysis, the results showed that a total of 199192788 tons of cargo were handled between 1977 and 2014. This was composed of containerized cargo (29.29%), liquid cargo (28.46%), general cargo (28.16%) and dry bulk cargo (14.09%). The result revealed container cargo as gaining more dominance as a veritable means of packaging as the case is in ports of other countries of the world. Again, record of liquid cargo showed that crude oil which is a major component of the liquid cargo is the only most traded product Nigeria has on the international trading interface. The study recommended that Nigerian government needs to intensify trading in container cargo by developing her manufacturing sector in other to promote exports in manufactured products. Terminal operators need to increase the capacity of their various terminals to accommodate more container cargo. Also, government needs to diversify the Nigerian economy in order to increase  her trading in other cargo types so as to reduce over reliance on liquid cargo especially crude oil whose price is subject to global economic calculations and sometimes, political negotiations.
