Assessment of Urban Land-use and Road Network Development in Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study assessed the urban land-use/land cover types and the level of compliance of the area of land used for road network vis-a-vis other urban land-use types in Ikorodu Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos State, Nigeria. This was with the view of situatingthe level of compliance within the urban planning regulation inNigeria. The data used for this study were obtained from secondary sources such asadministrative map of Lagos State and high resolutionsatellite imagery. Data were analysed using percentage distribution, remote sensing and geospatial techniques.The results of image classification of the area showed that roads, buildings, waterbody and vegetation were 19%, 30%, 22% and29% respectively. In terms of compliance to urban planning regulation, the urbanised built-up area indicated low (19%) compliance to planning regulation of 23 – 26% of the total land area.The study concluded that theroad network was inadequate and thus remained a challenge for transport connectivity in the study area.
